Jim Gleason, the noted pastel pet portraits artist, grew up in the Pacific North West and attended high school in the Seattle, Washington area. Shortly after graduation he signed a professional baseball contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His baseball career ended after four seasons due to an injury to his pitching arm. Jim Gleason returned home to Washington and went straight into the employ of the Washington State Patrol. Jim Gleason served for twenty-six years with the Washington State Patrol which was interrupted by a leave of absence while he served with the Marine Corps from 1962 to 1965 in Southeast Asia. It was during the Marine Corps tour of duty that the pastel pet portraits artist began to experiment with pen and ink sketchings.
Jim Gleason tried some projects of oil painting on velvet and after completing about a dozen oil paintings on velvet he put away his brushes because of career and family demands. Jim Gleason transferred and moved his family to Goldendale, Washington in 1974 and retired from the State Patrol in 1986. Immediately upon retirement from the State Patrol he ran for and was elected as sheriff of Klickitat County where he served two terms. The pastel pet portraits artist also graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1987 and in January of 1995 Jim Gleason retired from public service for the last time. Once he was truly retired, Jim Gleason looked for a wintertime hobby and he picked up his brushes and started refining and honing his artistic skills. The pastel pet portraits artist has not slowed down since that time.
